Northumberland Castles
Mitford Castle
Standing above the river Wansbeck, Mitford Castle is a ruined Norman motte and baily castle which is on the buildings at risk register. The castle was once the headquarters of a bunch of bandits who held people at the castle for ransom. Their leader Sir Gilbert de Middleton and his brother were later captured and executed at the Tower of London in 1318.
